UK: ASLEF strikes likely to severely disrupt London Underground services Nov. 7 and Nov. 12 despite cancellation of planned RMT work stoppages /update 1

RMT cancels strikes in London, UK, scheduled for early November; major Tube disruptions likely on Nov. 7 and Nov. 12 due to ASLEF strikes.

Warning

Train operators and other rail staff affiliated with the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) are planning to stage strikes in London on Nov. 7 and Nov. 12 to demand higher wages. Transport for London (TfL) authorities have said that the Nov. 7 strike will likely halt London Underground (Tube) services, and the Nov. 12 strike will severely disrupt Tube services and cause any operable services to start late and finish early. Additionally, some maintenance train drivers affiliated with the ASLEF will stage a 24-hour strike from 18:00 Nov. 1 and will be banned from working overtime through Nov. 8. Rail transport managers affiliated with the ASLEF will also be banned from working overtime Nov. 3-16. The ASLEF represents some 2,000 Tube drivers.

Tube workers affiliated with the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) had also planned to stage work stoppages in early November over compensation issues but reportedly suspended their strike plans after receiving an improved offer following negotiations with Tube management.

The planned labor actions on Nov. 7 and Nov. 12 will likely significantly disrupt rail services, particularly Tube services, throughout London. Rail transport disruptions may continue after the strike actions conclude. Station closures are possible. The strikes will likely raise demand for alternative modes of public transport and prompt increased traffic congestion. Striking workers may protest outside rail stations and other transport hubs. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that materialize.

Reconfirm Tube schedules and bookings Nov. 7 and Nov. 12. Consider using alternative modes of transport during the strike periods. Allocate additional time for travel to account for possible increased traffic congestion. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize as a precaution. Adhere to local travel and security advice.
