Malawi: Opposition activists call for nationwide protests Dec. 19

A group of opposition activists have called for nationwide protests in Malawi Dec. 19. They are demanding that incumbent President Chakwera be impeached over ongoing food, fuel and medicine shortages amongst other issues.

Protests could draw several hundred attendees, especially in large urban areas such as Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu; protest hotspots in Lilongwe could include the Mchesi and Capital Hill areas. Increased security is likely near protest locations and along march routes. Localized ground travel delays are likely. Although unlikely, clashes between demonstrators, counter-protesters and police are possible if participants ignore police orders to disperse or if they are overly disruptive.
