Malaysia: Red rain warnings issued for Kelantan and Terengganu through Dec. 30

Red continuous rain warnings issued for parts of Kelantan and Terengganu, Malaysia, through at least Dec. 30.

Warning

Officials have issued red (highest level) and orange (second highest level) continuous rain warnings for Kelantan and Terengganu states through at least Dec. 30. The warning coincides with ongoing localized flooding in the area that has resulted in the evacuation of hundreds of people. The warnings and rainfall coincide with the region's northeast monsoon period (running through April).

Heavy downpours, flooding, and landslides could affect business, transport, and utility services in many areas. The potential for flooding is highest in low-lying communities near watercourses. Urban flooding is possible in areas with poorly maintained, inadequate, or non-existent drainage systems. Landslides and mudslides are possible in hilly and mountainous areas.

Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Severe weather could also trigger flight delays and cancellations at domestic and international airports.

Monitor local media for updates and advisories on weather conditions. Confirm all transport reservations prior to travel. Due to the threat of flooding, avoid low-lying areas near streams, rivers, and other bodies of water, such as reservoirs and coastlines. Do not drive on flooded roads. Exercise caution in elevated terrain due to the threat of landslides/mudslides. Charge battery-powered devices when electricity is available; restrict the use of cellphones to emergencies only during periods of severe weather.
