Malaysia: Political party to hold rally outside Palace of Justice courthouse in Putrajaya from 08:00 Jan. 6

Activists plan to protest at Palace of Justice courthouse in Putrajaya from 08:00 Jan. 6. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

The United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) parties will hold a rally outside the Palace of Justice courthouse in Putrajaya from 08:00 Jan. 6. Participants are expressing support for imprisoned UMNO leader and former Prime Minister Najib Razak, who will appear at the court for an appeal hearing the same day. Organizers claim 30,000 people will attend the event.

Authorities have announced heightened security deployment to monitor the demonstration. Increased security is also likely at nearby government buildings and public squares to prevent unannounced gatherings. Traffic curbs and congestion are almost certain along roads and public transport lines passing the protest site. Vehicle processions and street marches to the rally venue are possible, exacerbating transport disruptions. Activists may clash with rival groups and/or police. Security personnel may use force or conduct mass arrests to control any crowds that defy official restrictions or attempt to breach security cordons. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.

Avoid the protest and navigating any roadblocks due to possible violence. If clashes break out, immediately depart the area for a secure, nongovernment building. Confirm road status and transport reservations in the affected area through the evening of Jan. 6; allow additional travel time. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
