Mexico: Teachers to strike nationwide and protest in Mexico City on Dec. 9
Teachers affiliated with the CNTE to strike nationwide and protest in Mexico City, Mexico, from 10:00 Dec. 9. March to National Palace.
Unionized teachers affiliated with the National Coordinating Committee of Education Workers (Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educacion, CNTE) plan to strike nationwide and protest in Mexico City on Dec. 9. In Mexico City, protesters will gather at the Angel of Independence (Angel de la Independencia) monument from 10:00 before marching to the National Palace. Teachers are demanding various education policy reforms. Hundreds of people are likely to attend the protest.
Heightened security is likely near the protest in Mexico City. Additional gatherings are possible near government buildings and plazas nationwide. Disruptions to some education operations are possible through the course of Dec. 9. Violence at related protests is unlikely. Some localized road travel disruptions are likely as protesters gather, march and later disperse.
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Plan accordingly for increased absenteeism among employees who are parents or guardians of school-aged children on Dec. 9; consider a liberal telecommuting policy for the duration of the strike. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
