Mozambique: Authorities conducting security operation in Maputo and Matola following prison break Dec. 25

Authorities conducting security operation in Maputo and Matola, Mozambique following prison break, Dec. 25. Plan for disruptions.

Warning

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture in Maputo and Matola over the coming days following a prison break that occurred on Dec. 25 at Matola's Machava Central Prison; Matola lies immediately adjacent to Maputo. While details of the incident remain limited, preliminary reports indicate that around 2,500 inmates staged a mutiny and escaped.

Although authorities have released no details concerning specific measures it may take or operations it may launch, security forces will almost certainly establish checkpoints, increase patrols, and stage search operations in their effort to recapture the escapees.

Further security measures may be enacted with little to no warning. Transport and business disruptions are likely until the security operation ends. Local groups could stage protests against the curfew, especially if the restriction remains in effect for an extended period of time.

Exercise increased vigilance if operating in Maputo and Matola over the coming days. Strictly heed all official directives. Always carry proper identification; be polite and nonconfrontational if stopped at a security checkpoint.

The prison break comes amid considerably elevated political tensions following the Oct. 9 elections. Opposition parties called the process fraudulent before the election results were announced, and have launched a protracted campaign of protests that has resulted in violence and associated casualties.
