Syria: Protests over minority groups' rights likely in several cities through December
Protests likely in multiple cities across Syria through late December following alleged attack on shrine. Avoid all protests.
Additional demonstrations by minority groups, including Alawite Shi'as and Christians, are likely across Syria through late December. Protests occurred on Dec. 25 in several areas, including Latakia, Tartus, and Homs, in reaction to the release of a video showing an attack on an Alawite shrine in Aleppo. The purpose of the actions is to demand stronger protections for minority groups. In response, some cities, including Homs, have imposed temporary nightly curfews to maintain order.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in affected areas and may deploy additional forces to monitor any protests that may materialize. Localized disruptions to transport and business activities are likely; clashes between protesters and security personnel remain possible.
Avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for clashes. Depart the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Plan accordingly for potential disruptions to ground travel. Heed the instructions of security officials.
