Turkiye: Activists to demonstrate in Izmir Dec. 28
Activists to protest at Turkan Saylan Cultural Center in Izmir, Turkiye, from 17:00 Dec. 28. Heightened security likely.
Activists plan to protest at the Turkan Saylan Cultural Center on 1440 Sokak in Izmir from 17:00 on Dec. 28. The purpose of the demonstration is to commemorate the 1978 killing of Alevi individuals in Kahramanmaras and the 2011 killing of Kurdish individuals in Ortasu/Roboski. It was not immediately clear how many participants may attend.
Police will likely deploy nearby to facilitate the demonstration. Localized transport disruptions are likely, particularly if demonstrators march through surrounding areas. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the protest area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the Turkan Sayran Cultural Center. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
