Turkiye: Alevi activists likely to stage demonstrations across country through at least Dec. 22

Alevi activists to rally in Kahramanmaras, Turkiye, from 10:00 Dec. 21; related demonstrations likely nationwide through at least Dec. 22.

Alevi activists are likely to hold demonstrations across Turkiye through at least Dec. 22 to commemorate the 1978 killing of Alevi individuals in Kahramanmaras. Leaders of Alevi civil groups plan to hold a large demonstration at Erenler Cemevi on 43012 Sokak in Kahramanmaras from 10:00 Dec. 21. Several hundred people may participate. Related gatherings may occur throughout the country. Additional announced gatherings include the following:

  • Ankara: March from Yunus Emre Parki from 18:00 Dec. 21.

  • Kahramanmaras: Gathering at Erenler Cemevi from 12:00 Dec. 20.

Police will likely deploy near all gathering sites to facilitate the demonstrations. Localized transport disruptions are likely, particularly if demonstrators march. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near any demonstration sites. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
