UK: Unionized rail workers plan to strike nationwide Dec. 22-23

Unionized train managers employed by the Avanti West Coast train operator plan to strike nationwide Dec. 22-23. The purpose of the strike, organized by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), is to demand improved working conditions and increased salaries. Avanti West Coast authorities have stated that they will release a revised timetable for Dec. 22-23 prior to the strike. The RMT plans to conduct another strike on Dec. 29.

Unless averted, the strike is likely to disrupt long-distance train travel along the UK's West Coast Mainline. The work stoppage will likely prompt increased bookings for alternative train routes; congestion is likely on services that do operate. Residual delays are possible in the hours after the end of the strike. Picket demonstrations are possible at rail hubs and Avanti West Coast offices and a heightened security presence is likely near any gatherings.
