Authorities have partially reopened the A1 motorway east of Hamburg following an earlier closure due to a multi-vehicle traffic accident that occurred early Jan. 6. Southbound lanes have reopened to traffic, although the northbound lanes remain closed as of early evening. All lanes were previously closed between Barsbuttel and Stapelfeld junctions. Early reports indicate that at least five vehicles were involved in the collision, including one truck that hit a bridge support. The incident resulted in at least six injuries. Emergency operations are ongoing. Authorities expect northbound lanes to reopen later in the evening of Jan. 6.
Traffic disruptions will likely extend for several hours after the A1 has completely reopened. Residual traffic congestion is also possible along designated detour routes.
Allow extra time for travel along the A1 east of Hamburg through at least the late evening of Jan. 6. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
