India: Authorities to maintain increased security in Andhra Pradesh State, and Bhubaneswar, Odisha State, Jan. 8-9
Prime Minister Modi to visit Andhra Pradesh State, and Bhubaneswar, Odisha State, India, Jan. 8-9. Increased security likely.
Authorities will likely maintain increased security across Andhra Pradesh State, and Bhubaneswar, Odisha State, ahead of a visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Jan. 8-9. Initial sources indicate Modi will arrive in Andhra Pradesh Jan. 8 where he will lay the foundation stones for a Hydrogen project in Pudimadaka, the South Coast Railway Headquarters at Visakhapatnam, and the Bulk Drug Park at Nakkapalli, and the Krishnapatnam Industrial Area in the Tirupati District. Modi will depart for Bhubaneswar on Jan. 9 to inaugurate the 18th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas convention at Janata Maidan Exhibition Center.
Security personnel may randomly check motorists and pedestrians near event venues for weapons and explosives. Additional security measures, including sniffer dogs, no-fly zones, and enhanced surveillance systems, will likely be implemented. Localized transport disruptions will likely occur as police ensure vehicular inspections are done. Associated business disruptions are possible. Flight disruptions at Visakhapatnam International Airport (VTZ) and Biju Patnaik International Airport (BBI) cannot be ruled out as Modi arrives and departs.
Demonstrations against Modi's visit are possible. Potential protest sites include outside public squares, government buildings, and thoroughfares. Authorities will likely monitor such events and disperse any disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out.
Exercise caution near official event sites. As a standard precaution, avoid any demonstration that materializes. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional time to reach destinations near demonstration sites and areas where traffic advisories are in force. Plan accordingly for possible flight disruptions at VTZ and BBI between Jan. 8-9. Carry proper identification documents at all times. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
