Serbia: Activists to demonstrate in Novi Sad Jan. 11

Student activists to protest at Security Intelligence Agency building in Novi Sad, Serbia, from 11:00 Jan. 11. Heightened security likely.

Informational

Student activists plan to protest at the Security Intelligence Agency (Bezbednosno-informativna agencija, BIA) on Bulevar Oslobodjenja in Novi Sad from 11:00 Jan. 11. The purpose of the demonstration is to demand that executive branch officials refrain from politically pressuring the country's judiciary and to demand that authorities release information related to the fatal Nov. 1 roof collapse at the Novi Sad Train Station. It was not immediately clear how many people would participate in the protest.

Law enforcement officers will likely deploy nearby to facilitate the gathering. The presence of demonstrators will likely disrupt vehicular travel in the area. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or ideologically opposed individuals may occur.

Avoid the protest as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the protest site. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.

Students have conducted regular protests across Serbia since the Novi Sad Train Station roof collapse on Nov. 1. Most protests have taken the form of 15-minute blockades or rallies around 12:00 on weekdays; however, larger and longer gatherings periodically take place.
