Guatemala: Increased activity reported at Fuego Volcano as of May 4

The Guatemalan Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology (Insivumeh) has reported increased levels of volcanic activity at the Fuego Volcano, located approximately 40 km (25 miles) west-southwest of Guatemala City, as of early May 4. The eruptive activity has produced pyroclastic flows in the Ceniza ravine and an ash column over 5,500 meters (18,045 feet), which is being dispersed in a westward direction up to 35 km from the crater. Authorities have warned that volcanic activity is likely to continue to increase, and further ash columns and both pyroclastic and lava flows may be emitted in the coming hours.
Authorities have not issued any evacuation orders for surrounding communities as of early May 4; however, the public is being advised to monitor the situation, take necessary precautions, and prepare for possible evacuations if required. An exclusion zone between 5-7 km (3-4 miles) is being maintained around the summit. Additional eruptions could cause low-level seismic activity, further lava and pyroclastic flows, ash clouds, and landslides in the surrounding area.
Transport
Road conditions could quickly deteriorate during periods of significant ashfall, and visibilities could be significantly reduced. In the past, officials have closed portions of National Route 14 near the volcano as a precaution due to the threat of debris flows. Authorities could temporarily suspend flights out of La Aurora International Airport (GUA) if a significant eruption occurs. Such a stoppage is most likely if southwesterly winds occur during the eruption, which could shift the ash cloud over the Guatemala City metropolitan area.
