Cambodia: Increase in sexual assault cases targeting lone women in Siem Reap

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issued a travel warning on June 19 for Siem Reap, warning that there has been a recent increase in the number of reported incidents of sexual assault targeting lone women. Women have reportedly been particularly targeted in the Pub Street area of Siem Reap by men claiming to be motorcycle taxi drivers.

The FCO advised travelers to remain vigilant, particularly when walking in Siem Reap alone.

Context

Siem Reap is one of the poorest provinces in Cambodia and petty theft is common, however instances of physical or sexual assault have historically remained low.

Advice

Individuals in Siem Reap are advised to exercise vigilance, avoid walking alone (particularly at night), and only use official taxi companies.

More generally, political tensions remain high in Cambodia, and although incidents of politically-motivated violence have fallen in recent years, political disputes still have the potential to trigger violent protests. Avoid large gatherings, demonstrations, and political rallies and avoid expressing opinions on Cambodian politics or culture.​
