On Thursday, May 25, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) announced that general elections will be held on November 26. Around 6.2 million Hondurans will be eligible to vote. The election will include a vote for the next president, 128 deputies to the National Congress, 298 mayors, and 20 deputies to the Central American Parliament. Political parties have until June 9 to register candidates for the general election. Political demonstrations are expected to start in the coming weeks as parties prepare for the upcoming vote.

Context

General elections are held every four years. Primary elections were held on March 12 with a 43 percent turnout rate. Current President Juan Orlando Hernandez is seeking reelection after securing an overwhelming victory in the primary.

Individuals in Honduras are advised to avoid polling stations on election day and to avoid any demonstrations. Note that political activism by foreign nationals is prohibited under Honduran law; foreigners who take part in demonstrations or other political activities risk detention and or/deportation.
