Sri Lanka: Violent protest in Colombo May 17

Violent protest in Colombo May 17; further demonstrations possible amid ongoing controversy about private medical colleges

Warning

Event

Some 3000 students protested in the capital city of Colombo on Wednesday, May 17, despite a court ruling banning such a protest. Protesters and security forces clashed in Viharamahadevi Park; 21 injured students were taken to the hospital for treatment. Further associated protests are possible in the near future.

Context

The Student Activists Committee of Colombo’s Medical Faculty held the demonstration to denounce private medical colleges, notably the South Asia Institute of Technology and Medicine, after the Minister of Higher Education gave recognition to the school as a legitimate degree-awarding institute. The head of the Inter University Students’ Federation said the struggle would continue until a suitable solution is found.

Advice

Individuals present in Sri Lanka are advised to avoid all gatherings due to the potential for violence.
