Hong Kong: Spike in seasonal flu cases amid outbreak

Event

An unusually long flu outbreak has been affecting Hong Kong since May. As of July 25, public hospitals are overcrowded and over their occupancy limits, with around one thousand patients arriving every day. Some 300 severe flu cases have been reported thus far and 205 patients died since May.

Context

In Hong Kong, seasonal influenza  is common from January to March and from July to August. Seasonal influenza is an acute illness of the respiratory tract caused by influenza viruses. It is characterized by a sudden onset of fever, cough (usually dry), headache, muscle and joint pain, severe malaise (feeling unwell), sore throat, and a runny nose.

Advice

All those present in Hong Kong are advised to take basic hygienic measures to reduce their risk of contracting the flu (e.g., frequent hand washing) and to consider getting vaccinated. Individuals developing the above symptoms are advised to seek medical attention.
