A rare heatwave is forecast to continue in the Pacific Northwest (encompassing Washington, Oregon, and Northern California) through at least Friday, August 4, bringing highs over 38°C (100°F) to a region that rarely sees temperatures above 32°C (90°F). On August 3, highs in Seattle (Washington), are expected to top 39.5°C (103°F), while Portland (Oregon) is forecast to reach the record of 41.5°C (107°F). Temperatures in Medford (Oregon, near the California border) could reach 45.5°C (114°F) on August 2. Authorities in the region have advised residents to take precautions against high temperatures, particularly vulnerable individuals (seniors, children, etc.).

Individuals in areas affected by extreme temperatures are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, to remain well-hydrated (with sugar-free, non-alcoholic beverages), to wear loose, light-colored clothing, and to remain indoors during the hottest part of the day (generally between 10:00 and 15:00).
