Vietnam: Deadly flooding in north continues August 7 /update 1

Event

Floods in northern Vietnam caused by torrential rains ongoing since early August have killed at least 26 people and washed away hundreds of homes as of August 7. At least 15 people remain missing, with search and rescue operations severely hampered by damage to roads from landslides; nearly 5000 soldiers, police, and civilians have been mobilized to help.

Context

The summer monsoon season (May to October) in northern Vietnam regularly results in flooding.

Individuals in Vietnam are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders) and follow local weather forecasts. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
