United States: Trump rally and counter-protests in Phoenix August 22

Event

United States President, Donald Trump, is scheduled to hold a rally in Phoenix, Arizona at 19:00 (local time) on Tuesday, August 22 at the Phoenix Convention Center. Largescale anti-Trump protests have been planned for Tuesday, and fourteen groups are expected to attend, including Antifa and the local Democratic Socialists chapter. Demonstrations will be held at the State Capitol from 15:30 until 17:00, the Phoenix Convention Center at 17:00, and outside the Hyatt downtown at 17:30. A "Unity Vigil" will also be held near 3rd street and McDowell Road; the group is expected to march to St. Mary's Basilica Courtyard, before continuing to the State Capitol.

In light of the violence that occurred at a "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, on August 12, Arizona police officials have stated that they taking additional measures to adequately prepare for the rally and ensure public order. The following roads will be closed as a safety precaution: Monroe Street from 2nd Street to 7th Street, 3rd Street from Washington Street to Van Buren Street, and 5th Street from Jefferson Street to Van Buren Street. Due to the abovementioned road closures and protests, transportation disruptions are likely throughout Phoenix on Tuesday.

Due to the potential for violent clashes between pro-Trump supporters and counterprotesters, schools in Phoenix have announced plans to send students home early ahead of the rally, and businesses within a half-mile radius of the Phoenix Convention Center will be closed. Context

Tensions are high across the country after violence broke out at a Unite the Right rally organized by white-supremacist groups in Charlottesville on August 12. One person was killed and at least another 19 injured when an assailant identified as a white nationalist intentionally drove a car into a group of counterprotesters. Peaceful protests have since been held in Boston and other major cities on August 19.
