Protesting workers clashed with security personnel in Chittagong on Tuesday, August 29, resulting in at least 15 people injured. At least 400 protesting workers blocked the Chittagong-Hathazari road in front of the jute mill where they work at around 09:00 (local time). The protesters reportedly blocked the street with burning tires and logs. Around 11:00, police reportedly charged the protesters with batons. Police officials reported that the street reopened to traffic around 14:30. Additional protests are possible in the coming days

Context

The workers are protesting six months of unpaid salaries that they are owed by the factory’s management. Union representatives reportedly met with management in the afternoon of August 29, and assured workers that they will be paid before the Eid-al-Adha holiday, which begins on the evening of Thursday, August 31.
