Bangladesh: Factory workers' protests likely to persist in Dhaka Division through early October /update 2

Factory workers' protests likely to continue in Dhaka Division, Bangladesh, through early October. Business, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Unionized factory workers will likely continue their protest campaign in Dhaka Division through early October to address several demands, including higher pay. Since early September, thousands of factory workers, primarily in the garment industry, have staged various types of demonstrations; employees in the pharmaceutical sector have also previously held similar rallies. Despite an agreement between the interim government and workers on Sept. 24, protests continue sporadically in major industrial areas such as Adamjinagar, Ashulia, Dhamrai, Gazipur, and Savar.

Several businesses continue to suspend operations in response to the unrest. As of Sept. 30, 65 garment factories reportedly remain closed in the Ashulia area of Savar Upazila. Additional diverse gatherings, including strikes and road blockades, remain possible over the coming days. Potential rally sites include factories, government buildings, sports fields, public squares, and thoroughfares. Well-attended demonstrations will likely draw hundreds to thousands of participants.

Authorities will likely deploy additional security personnel to monitor related protests. Police could use force, including baton charges and tear gas, to disperse unruly crowds. Officials may also implement enhanced security measures, such as temporary public gathering restrictions. Isolated security incidents, including vandalism and clashes between workers and police, are possible. Associated transport and business disruptions, including shipping delays, are likely.

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for potential business and transport disruptions; consider alternative arrangements for time-sensitive appointments or shipments. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission at all times. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
