Guatemala: Eruption of Fuego volcano; no evacuations

Event

The Fuego Volcano (Volcán de Fuego), located approximately 50 km (30 mi) southwest of the capital Guatemala City, entered into an eruptive phase on Thursday, September 29. Numerous explosions were registered and the volcano spewed ash some 4800 m (15,700 ft) above sea level, which was blown more than 30 km (20 mi) to the west and northwest. Ash fall has been reported in the villages of La Soledad, Pastores, and San Miguel Dueñas, as well as the popular tourist destination Antigua Guatemala. Numerous explosions have been registered, along with lava flow. No evacuation orders have been issued for the moment. In the event of more intense volcanic activity, flights to and from Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (GUA) could face delays or cancelations.

Context

This is the tenth time the volcano - situated between the three southern departments of Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and Sacatepéquez - has entered an eruptive phrase since the beginning of the year.
