Jamaica: Three by-elections planned for Oct. 30
Prime Minister Andrew Holness declares three by-elections for parliamentary seats will be held on October 30
Event
Prime Minister Andrew Holness declared on Monday, October 2, that by-elections will be held on Monday, October 30, for the parliamentary seats of Saint Mary South Eastern, Saint Andrew South Western, and Saint Andrew Southern. The seats are currently held by the opposition People's National Party (PNP). Official nominations for the seats will be announced on Monday, October 9. Political rallies and events will likely occur in the weeks leading up to the election following the announcement of the nominees.
Context
The three parliamentary seats are empty following the death of Member of Parliament (MP) Dr. Winston Green in August, as well as the retirement of two MPs, including former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller. Both the PNP and the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) will run candidates for the seats.
Advice
Individuals present in Jamaica are advised to remain vigilant and to follow all instructions issued by local authorities. Take basic security precautions (e.g. keep signs of wealth concealed, drive with doors locked and windows rolled up, etc.). Furthermore, while election-related unrest is unlikely, individuals should avoid any demonstrations as a precaution.
