Turkey: Security checkpoints erected in Istanbul

Security checkpoints in Istanbul as part of Operation “Wolf Trap-9”; 2000 security forces deployed

Warning

Event

On Monday, October 9, security checkpoints were erected in 39 districts in Istanbul as part of Operation Wolf Trap-9, launched as a preventive effort to improve the city’s overall security. Some 2000 security forces were deployed to search vehicles and check the identification documents of drivers and passengers. No arrests have been reported thus far (as of Monday evening).

Context

The general security situation in Turkey remains precarious due to the heightened risk of terrorism. The country has been a target of multiple attacks perpetrated by both the Islamic State and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Moreover, a national state of emergency has been in place since July 2016 following an attempted coup d'état by members of the armed forces.

Advice

Individuals in Istanbul are advised to adopt a cooperative attitude when dealing with security forces and avoid any sudden movements if stopped at checkpoints.
