Honduras: Carnival celebrations in Tegucigalpa Sep. 23-24

Increased crime rates and transportation disruptions possible during carnival celebrations September 23-24 in capital Tegucigalpa

Warning

Event

Carnival celebrations are set to take place in the capital Tegucigalpa on Saturday, September 23, and Sunday, September 24. Festivities will begin on Saturday at 14:00 (local time) with a parade on Suyapa Boulevard. An influx of tourists - more than 500,000 visitors - is expected and, as such, increased congestion at travel hubs, demand for hotels, and car traffic in the city (closed roads, affluence of revelers) is to be anticipated, along with business and store closures. An increased security presence is also planned.

Context

The annual celebrations are being held in honor of the city’s patron saint, San Miguel Arcángel, and to mark the 439th anniversary of the city’s founding.

Advice

Individuals in Tegucigalpa are advised to exercise vigilance regarding the increased risk of petty crime (carry only small amounts of cash, leave copies of passports/credit cards in a safe location, etc.) and to allow for additional time to reach their destinations.
