Dominican Republic: National doctor strike October 25-26

National doctor strike October 25-26, service disruptions likely; related protest October 24

Warning

Event

Doctors throughout the country will strike on Wednesday, October 25, and Thursday, October 26. During this 48-hour period hospitals will likely only offer emergency services. As such, scheduled appointments may be canceled and longer-than-normal wait times are to be anticipated in emergency rooms.

Furthermore, an associated demonstration will be held in the capital Santo Domingo on October 24; protesters will march to the building housing the Ministry of Public Health. Other demonstrations are possible throughout the duration of the strike. Clashes with security forces and other forms of violence cannot be ruled out.

Context

Doctors have held numerous strikes and protests over the past two years to demand higher salaries and increased investment in the healthcare system, among other grievances.

Advice

Individuals present in the Dominican Republic are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, confirm doctor’s appointments, and anticipate longer waiting times in hospitals.
