Malta: Demonstrations likely to continue in honor of slain journalist

On Sunday, October 29, some 10,000 people protested in Sliema to demand justice following the murder earlier this month of journalist and anti-corruption blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia. Demonstrators called for the resignation of the country’s Chief of Police and Minister of Justice, slamming authorities for allowing a “culture of impunity” to develop.

Despite the ongoing investigation, no suspect has yet been identified. Daphne Caruana Galizia’s funeral is set to take place on November 3 and additional events in her honor are particularly likely on and around this date.

Context

Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered on October 16 at her home at Bidnija in a car bomb attack. She was well-known for her investigative reports on some of the country’s most scandalous corruption affairs, often involving high government officials.

Sunday’s mass rally was the second such event to take place since Caruana Galizia’s death, with thousands having gathered on October 22 in Valleta in her honor.
