Warning

Event

The Thai Culture Ministry announced on Wednesday, November 29, that Sanam Luang, where the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej was cremated, will remain open to the public through December 31. The public will therefore be allowed to visit the royal crematorium and associated exhibition at Sanam Luang to pay respects to the late king until the end of next month, resulting in large crowds and increased security surrounding the site. The area is open daily from 07:00 to 22:00 (local time).

Context

King Adulyadej was the world's longest-serving monarch, loved by his people and portrayed by the palace as a guiding light through decades of political turmoil, coups, and violent unrest. He died on October 13, 2016. The royal cremation ceremony took place October 26, 2017, and was attended by over 300,000 people. A year-long mourning period officially ended on October 30. From November 2-28, some 2.38 million people reportedly visited the royal crematorium at Sanam Luang.

Advice

Individuals present in Bangkok should anticipate large crowds, an enhanced security presence, and possible transportation disruptions in the vicinity of Sanam Luang through December 31. Additionally, while the official mourning period has ended, visitors to Sanam Luang should be particularly respectful and are advised to wear dark-colored, somber, and modest clothing.
