Tropical Storm Berguitta to bring hazardous sea and weather conditions on January 17; preventive measures in place

Local authorities have issued a “level 3 cyclone alert” for Tropical Storm Berguitta, which is expected to hit Mauritius on Wednesday evening, January 17 (local time). Hazardous sea and weather conditions are anticipated in the northwest of the island, including winds up to 200 km/h (125 mph), sea swells up to 10 m (32 ft), and heavy rainfall. Schools across the island have been closed since Tuesday, January 16, and until further notice.

Berguitta was classified as a Category 2 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale on January 16 and is expected to intensify into a Category 3 storm before making landfall, indicating the possibility of highly dangerous winds and potentially extensive damage.

Transportation disruptions are to be anticipated beginning on Wednesday; Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (SSR) has been closed since 07:00 (local time) and the Port Louis Harbour, the island’s main port, has also closed until further notice.

Context

Mauritius experiences an annual cyclone season from November through May, during which time heavy rainfall on the island can cause extensive damage.

All those present in Mauritius are advised to monitor the situation and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Be prepared to leave immediately if an evacuation order is given; otherwise, remain indoors until authorities have indicated that the storm has passed. Distance yourself from natural bodies of water and be aware that hotels and airports may close in the event of a storm alert.
