Algeria: Doctor strike continues February 13 /update 1

Event

A national strike by medical residents (doctors) continues as of Tuesday, February 13, following repeated failed negotiation attempts with the Ministry of Justice. Striking workers defied a general ban on demonstrations in Algiers and took the streets on Monday. Despite the mass deployment of security forces, demonstrators gathered at Place de la Grande Poste and in front of the parliament building, where a meeting with the president of the parliament was being held. Overall, the demonstration remained peaceful and no major clashes were reported.

Additional protests (e.g. sit-ins) and severe medical service disruptions are to be anticipated throughout the duration of the strike.

Context

The Autonomous Medical Residents Collective (CAMRA) launched the protest three months ago to demand the suspension of mandatory civil service for Algerian doctors.
