Hong Kong: Flu outbreak continues /update 1

Event

According to health officials, at least 10,818 flu cases have been reported in Hong Kong in 2018 as of Saturday, February 17. The Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection announced that 388 severe flu cases, and at least 230 flu-related deaths had also been confirmed between January 7 and February 15. In addition, due to high demand, a shortage of flu vaccines has been reported in recent weeks throughout Hong Kong. To help contain the spread of the virus, kindergartens and primary schools will remain closed throughout the Chinese Near Year break (i.e. until March 12).

Context

An ongoing cold spell in Hong Kong has coincided with an increase in cases of influenza. Hundreds of individuals have sought treatment in hospitals, which have been struggling since early January to manage the surge in patients.

Influenza is a contagious virus that can spread from human to human. Symptoms include high fever, aching muscles, headache, and respiratory issues. Particularly vulnerable individuals include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, the obese, and individuals suffering from chronic diseases. An annual vaccine is available.

Individuals are advised to take preventive measures to minimize the risk of contracting or spreading the disease (e.g. wash hands thoroughly and frequently, avoid contact with sick individuals, etc.) and consult a medical professional regarding vaccination options.
