Alerts for violent surf/flooding along northern coast of the Dominican Republic remain in place March 9; beaches closed

Warning

Event

A yellow alert issued by the Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center (COE) on March 6 for the country’s northern coast due to violent surf remains in place as of early Friday, March 9. Flood alerts for low-lying areas in Matancitas (María Trinidad Sánchez province) and Gaspar Hernández (Espaillat province) are also still in effect, and beaches between Puerto Plata and Cabo Engaño remain closed.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to follow weather reports and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities. In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
