Swaziland: National celebrations April 19-20
Celebrations for the country’s 50th anniversary of independence and the King’s 50th birthday to last from April 19-April 20; associated protests planned for April 12

50/50 celebrations, marking Swaziland's 50th anniversary of independence from Great Britain as well as King Mswati III's 50th birthday, are planned throughout the country for April 19. The main celebration will be held at the Mavuso Exhibition Centre, which will be streamed live to the rest of the country. April 20 has also been declared a public holiday.
On April 12, the Swaziland National Union of Students plans to protest the extravagant spending of the 50/50 celebrations. As of Monday, March 19, the details of the protest had not been finalized, but increased security and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected surrounding the demonstration.
