Libya: Disruptions in Tripoli March 20 due to wedding event

Increased security, localized transportation disruptions expected surrounding high-profile wedding in Tripoli on March 20

Warning

Event

A high-profile wedding of a senior militia figure is expected to be held at a mosque near Algeria Square in Tripoli from 16:00 to 17:30 (local time) on Tuesday, March 20. An increased security presence is to be expected in the area during the event, and may lead to localized traffic disruptions. Celebratory gunfire is also possible.

Context

The groom is the second in command of the Tripoli Revolutionaries' Brigades (TRB), one of the more powerful militias in the capital. In addition to the general security risks posed by militia competition for territory and influence, which have diminished somewhat in recent months, the Islamic State (IS) has issued new threats against the capital. A suspected plot to strike government buildings with VBIEDs and BBIEDs was reportedly disrupted at the beginning of March.

Advice

Individuals present in the Tripoli area are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid large crowds as a precaution, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.

On a general note, the security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel to some areas is possible with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
