Vietnam: Chinese tourist cars allowed to travel to Ha Long

Northern Quang Ninh province allows cars driven by Chinese tourists to enter Ha Long city

Informational

Event

Vietnam's northern Quang Ninh province has decided to allow cars driven by Chinese tourists to enter Ha Long city, home to the world heritage site of Ha Long Bay, through the Mong Cai border crossing. Chinese nationals had previously been barred from visiting the city due to long-standing tensions between the two countries. Chinese tourists, however, will only be permitted to stay in the city for three days per visit. Cars entering Vietnam through the Mong Cai border crossing are also permitted to travel around Mong Cai city. The measure is being introduced on a trial basis until December 31.

Advice

Foreign nationals wishing to visit Vietnam can apply for and receive an e-visa online for visits of up to 30 days. However, the e-visa is only accepted at certain entry/exit points, which must be designated at the time of application. For visits longer than 30 days, foreign visitors must get a traditional visa from a Vietnamese embassy or consulate. Travelers overstaying a Vietnamese visa may be prevented from leaving the country until a fine is paid.
