Warning

Event

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Iranian President Hassan Rohani will attend a summit in Ankara on Wednesday, April 4, to discuss the ongoing conflict in Syria. Significantly increased security measures will be in place in the city for the duration of the conference. Around 4000 additional police officers will be deployed to provide security for Presidents Putin and Rohani. According to media reports, checkpoints will be established outside of the hotels hosting the heads of state. Localized transportation disruptions are anticipated in Ankara during the summit associated with the enhanced security measures (road closures, security checkpoints, etc.).

Context

Turkey, Russia, and Iran have sponsored a series of peace talks that have been held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. Representatives from the three countries met in Astana on March 26 to hold initial discussions before the upcoming April 4 summit.

Syria is enmeshed in a complex civil war that started between the Assad government and opposition forces in March 2011. Today, the conflict in Syria involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.

Advice

Individuals in Ankara are advised to allow for additional time to travel on April 4, adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities, and report any suspicious objects or behavior.
