India: Calm reported in Hindaun (Rajasthan state) following violence

Event

The town of Hindaun - located in Rajasthan state's Karauli district - experienced two consecutive days of clashes April 2-3, resulting in the implementation of a curfew on Tuesday afternoon, April 3. However, no new incidents of violence have been reported as of Wednesday, April 4. The situation has reportedly normalized, although additional forces are still in the area to maintain order. The curfew was lifted at 13:00 (local time) on Wednesday, although internet services will remain suspended throughout Karauli. Further protests are likely in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Violent protests by Dalit activists broke out in Hindaun, and elsewhere in the country, on Monday, April 2, to denounce a March 20 Supreme Court decision that would weaken a law protecting Dalits and other lower caste communities. Once classified as "untouchables," Dalits comprise 200 million of India's 1.25 billion inhabitants and are positioned at the bottom of the Hindu caste hierarchy.
