Egypt and Russia resume direct flights between the two countries on April 11 after two-year suspension following 2015 bombing of Russian plane over Sinai Peninsula

Informational

Event

Egypt and Russia are resuming direct flights between the two countries on Wednesday, April 11. The resumption of direct flights comes after such service was suspended for over two years following the bombing of Russian plane over the Sinai Peninsula in 2015. Together, Aeroflot and EgyptAir will provide five round-trip flights between Moscow and Cairo per week.

Context

Russia suspended direct flights to and from Egypt due to security concerns following a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) attack on Metrojet Flight 9268 on October 31, 2015, originating from Sharm El-Sheikh en route to Saint Petersburg; all 224 people on board died in the crash. Islamic State - Sinai Province (IS-SP) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Advice

Individuals planning on traveling between Egypt and Russia are advised to confirm flight reservations and to contact their airline for more information.
