Panama/Venezuela: Flights between two countries set to resume /update 2

Diplomatic relations reestablished between Panama and Venezuela April 26; flights between two countries to resume

Warning

Event

On Thursday, April 26, the governments of Panama and Venezuela announced that they were reestablishing diplomatic ties, which had been suspended since early April. As such, flight connections between the two countries are expected to resume in the coming days, potentially as early as Friday.

Venezuela had banned the Panamanian national carrier Copa Airlines (and other Panamanian businesses) from operating in the country on April 5, following which Panama announced a 90-day ban on all Venezuelan airlines that entered into effect on April 25.

Context

Copa Airlines will be one of the few major international airlines still serving Venezuela. Airlines including Santa Bárbara Airlines (SBA), American Airlines, Avianca, Iberia, Air France, United Airlines, Delta, Lufthansa, Air Canada, LATAM, and AeroMexico have suspended or reduced services to and from Venezuela in recent years due to currency exchange issues combined with low demand and deteriorating security conditions.

Advice

Travelers are advised to contact their airlines for more information.
