India: Anti-Maoists operations along Chhattisgarh-Telangana border April 27

Event

At least seven Maoists insurgents were killed by security forces during an operation carried out in Bijapur district, located along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana state border, on April 27. An elite anti-Naxal (Maoist) unit of the Telangana Police along with security personnel from Chhattisgarh launched the joint operation in the forests along the border, 500 km (300 mi) from the state capital Raipur. Last month, security forces raided a Maoist camp in Bijapur district, killing ten militants.

Context

Violent Maoist insurgents (Naxalites) have been active for several decades in rural areas of the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkand, Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal, as well as in the border region around Andra Pradesh. For this reason, the Odisha government has imposed major restrictions on the movement of foreign tourists in rural areas.

Individuals present in the states where Maoists are active are advised to stay away from areas prohibited by local authorities and adhere to all instructions issued by security personnel.
