India: At least 3000 families displaced by flooding in Tripura May 21

Flooding and mudslides in Tripura state leave at least six dead and 3000 families displaced as of May 21; further rainfall forecast in the coming hours

Warning

Event

Flooding and consequent mudslides in Tripura state had left at least six people dead and over 3000 families displaced in recent days as of Monday, May 21. The flooding also led to the temporary closure of the Assam-Agartala National Highway to traffic and the closures of several schools. Though the floodwaters began to recede on Monday - including from the districts of West Tripura, Gomati, Khowai, and Sipahijala - they had not yet fully receded from houses in affected areas, according to local officials. Further rainfall is forecast in several regions of Tripura in the coming hours; lingering transportation disruptions are expected in areas experiencing further flooding.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Anticipate temporary disruptions to power, telecommunications, and transportation.

Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rains; take measures to protect yourself from mosquito bites (e.g. use insect repellent, mosquito nets, etc.) and only consume purified water.
