Hospitals report hundreds of adult chickenpox cases in northern Vietnam as of mid-May; further spread of virus expected in near-term

Hundreds of cases of adult chickenpox have been recently reported in northern Vietnam as of mid-May. Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi reported that of the hundreds of cases received, dozens have exhibited complications including pneumonia, multiple skin infections, and encephalitis. Further spread of the disease is expected in northern Vietnam in the near-term.

Context

Chickenpox is a contagious infection that appears on the skin of an infected individual ten to 21 days after exposure. The virus typically lasts about five to ten days. The rashes on the skin may be accompanied by fever, loss of appetite, headache, and tiredness. The virus typically affects children but can be particularly dangerous in adult cases.
