Somalia: Puntland and Somaliland forces clash in Tukaraq May 24 published /update 2
Fighting breaks out between Puntland and Somaliland soldiers in disputed Sool region May 24; casualties likely
Event
Tensions remain high in Puntland and Somaliland as of Friday, May 25, following renewed fighting that broke out between forces from the two regions in the disputed town of Tukaraq (Sool region) the day prior. The number of casualties has not yet been reported. Additional clashes are possible in the coming days. The Somaliland and Puntland regional governments have both accused each side of initiating the clashes.
Context
Both Puntland and Somaliland have claimed the Sool and Sanaag regions for the past 25 years. Tensions have been particularly high since Somaliland soldiers took control of Tukaraq on January 22. On May 16, clashes in the area left at least 50 people dead. Although border violence between militias is a regular occurrence, direct fighting between armies is much more rare.
Advice
The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
