Sri Lanka: Flooding death toll rises May 25 /update 2

Heavy monsoon rains continue to batter Sri Lanka as of Friday, May 25, provoking flooding and landslides. The number of deaths attributed to the ongoing monsoon season, which began earlier this month, has now risen to 15 people. Additionally, according to the Disaster Management Center, the total number of people impacted has risen to 120,000. Continued heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast in these areas in the coming days.

Context

Monsoon rains typically hit Sri Lanka in May and June. In 2017, the monsoon season resulted in the disappearances and deaths of hundreds of people.

Individuals present in affected regions are advised to follow instructions issued by local authorities, particularly evacuation orders, and to keep abreast of weather forecasts. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
