Chile: Peak flu season to start mid-June

Chile’s Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday, June 5, that peak flu season was expected to start in two or three weeks. The ministry has launched a vaccination campaign particularly targeting the homeless. According to health officials, private and public health centers are currently reporting up to a 40 percent increase in new cases of respiratory diseases. Health authorities also said that high pollution levels in cities like Santiago, Cayhaique, and Temuco have led to an increase in cases.

Influenza is a contagious virus that can spread from human to human. Symptoms include high fever, aching muscles, headache, and respiratory issues. Particularly vulnerable individuals include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, the obese, and individuals suffering from chronic diseases. An annual vaccine is available
