India: Police issue terror warning for Uttar Pradesh

Police officials in Uttar Pradesh announced on Wednesday, June 6, that security measures had been increased throughout the state due to recent terrorist threats from the Pakistan-based Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT). Additional police officers have been deployed to secure major railway stations, as well as shopping malls and markets. Security measures have also been increased at religious sites, particularly around the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi and the Krishna Janmbhoomi in Mathura. Heightened measures are expected to remain in place through at least Sunday, June 10.

Context

The LeT carried out a series of coordinated attacks in Mumbai in November 2008, killing 164 people and wounding another 308.
