Switzerland: Major disruptions at Geneva Airport June 21 due to papal visit

Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Geneva on Thursday, June 21, and will arrive via Geneva International Airport (GVA). Airport officials are warning that large crowds are expected at the Palexpo convention center, located at the airport, where the pope will be holding a mass. This is expected to cause major traffic congestion and severely hinder road access to GVA between noon and midnight (local time); additionally, parking facilities may be full during this period.

Airport officials are consequently advising against nonessential travel via GVA on June 21. Individuals who must travel on that day are advised to arrive at the airport at least three hours ahead of flights (notably in the afternoon), use public transportation for travel to and from GVA, use online check-in options, and confirm the status of their flights prior to departure for the airport.

A visibly increased security presence should also be expected, along with congestion on roads and at other transportation hubs in Geneva.
