Eruption possible in coming days or weeks at the Nevados de Chillán volcano (south)

Warning

Event

Explosions and low-intensity earthquakes continue to be reported at the Nevados de Chillán volcano. According to the Chilean National Office of Emergencies (ONEMI), the volcano could enter into an eruptive phase in the coming days or weeks. ONEMI issued an orange alert, the second-highest level, for the volcano in early July, which remains in effect as of Monday, July 16. Lower yellow alerts for the surrounding municipalities of Pinto, Coihueco, and San Fabián also remain in place. No evacuation orders have been issued for the moment.

Context

The volcano is located in the Biobío region, some 380 km (235 mi) south of the capital Santiago, in an area home to a number of ski resorts and other tourist attractions. It last showed signs of activity in 2016 and its last major eruption occurred in 1973.

Chile, located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences the some of the most intense volcanic activity of all countries in the world, second only to Indonesia.

Advice

Individuals in southern Chile are advised to avoid the area, monitor the situation, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders).
